Give me five – five ways to bring some numeracy into your lesson

I’ve tried to come up with five interesting and meaningful ways you can quickly and easily introduce some numeracy into your non-Maths lesson.
Click here to download the PDF of “give me five” for most subjects.
Below is an extract from the document to give you an idea of it’s contents:
I’ve either invented these ideas myself, heard other people talk about them, or in several cases, borrowed them from other websites, worksheets, documents and publications which I’ve used in the past. But what have I missed?
Please add your ideas below as comments.
Free iPad app
This time of year there are a lot of Christmas activities around. Normally I would say bah humbug but this free app looks like it could be useful in a number of subjects.

It features three Maths games which can be played on varying difficulty levels. I’m hoping the app supports being projected onto the screen but I’ll have to try that out tomorrow.

Action Jackson
Action Jackson very kindly made us the following video to kick off our Super Learning Day for the year 10s with:
The man is a legend and so to receive this video, and a mug and badges, was really awesome!
Four Nations Maths Challenge
Update: we finished 2nd of the Secondary Schools in England!

The Students made an awesome start to the 2011 Four Nations Maths Challenge today.
At the end of the school day the stats were:
- 15th in England
- 5 students in the top 100
- 3 classes in the top 50
STEM Networking / Teachmeet

I was delighted to attend the first STEM specific Teachmeet in Norwich yesterday.
Teachmeets are a great way to share best practice and get out of hours CPD with likeminded teachers.
It was an excellent programme with something for everyone including:
- Rachel Jarrold (Wymondham High School)
- Jan Cockburn (CREST co-ordinator)
- Leslie Whyte venables (STEMNET)
As if that wasn’t enough we also got hands on with some homemade STOMP rockets!
I’ve grabbed some good resources for the Science department too. We are in the process of developing our role into a regional hub and so it was great to meet many of the people involved in a variety of activities locally.
Blast in PL/form time

You know a little bit of mental Maths first thing is going to be awesome for the kids and getting them ready for the day.
Blast works like this:
- Get all the student standing up
- Fire out some mental Maths questions e.g. 5×7
- The first hand up gets to answer
- If the student gets the answer right they get to blast someone else out of the game
- If it’s wrong they blast themselves out
- The last student standing wins
Try it out and let me know what you think!
