Maths poster treasure hunt

This activity is intended to raise awareness of famous Mathematicians.  It also supports literacy.

We have a series of Maths posters around the Academy which are changed regularly.

Students have to find the posters and then answer some questions about the people featured in the posters.

If they take show their teachers the answers within the timeframe they get rewarded.

Mathletics – Four Nations Challenge

The Project

The Four Nations Maths Challenge brings together students from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.  They compete in a series of challenges including quick fire mental Maths and core topic based exercises.  The Challenge lends itself well to some students being taken off timetable.  When we did it we didn’t take students off timetable but it’s something to consider for next time.

The Purpose

The project has several objectives:

  • Student’s enhance their Mathematical skills
  • Students from a variety of year groups and abilities are bought together in whole school competition
  • It provides opportunities for other subjects to include Maths activities into their lessons without specialist input

The Impact

Students love the Four Nations Maths Challenge, especially if, like us you manage to get into the top 10!  The impact on their enjoyment of Maths is also very marked and many choose to compete in their own time during the Maths Challenge week.  Colleagues also find this enthusiasm infectious and other subjects end up giving up some of their time to get involved in the competition.

Nintendo DSi Brain Training pilot

The Project

The project is all about assessing the impact of the use of Brain Training on Mathematical ability of the least able students.  If the assessment shows good progress the pilot will be rolled out to a wider audience.

The Purpose

The project has several objectives:

  • Develop core Maths skills in the least able
  • Measure the impact of using the DSi Brain Training software
  • Measure the impact of using an HLTA to work with the students in a small group

The Impact

The students selected have been tested using an NFER test.  I will update this post when they have begun their work with the DSi’s.
