Pop Music Maths

I thought I would mention the highly entertaining Maths pop songs used on the Chris Moyles show on Channel 4 incase you haven’t seen them.  Click here for the full list.

There are really good mental maths puzzles sung by some well known bands and singers. I use them as mental Maths starters and they work very effectively.

Important: check the song is suitable for the age group of the class you are playing it to.

Flash games

I’m a big fan of learning through doing and if games can help with Maths skills then I’m all for them!  Click here to get to several of my favourites.

In addition to some great Maths literacy games you might also enjoy; Mathionaire which is pretty much like the TV show but with Maths questions on a variety of topics.  Higher or Lower is all about probability, can you predict whether the next card will be higher or lower than the previous one.  Matching Game is a great test of memory but also a great chance to remind yourself of shape names or fraction relationships etc.

Mathletics

The awesome Ormiston Venture Aademy students did themselves proud with the 4 Nations Maths Challenge. The student reporters made the following report:

The students use a website called RadioWaves to run their own magazine. Very cool stuff and a brilliant experience for the students. You can read the Venture Student Magazine here.

Click here to download the PDF of “give me five” for most subjects.

Below is an extract from the document to give you an idea of it’s contents:

I’ve either invented these ideas myself, heard other people talk about them, or in several cases, borrowed them from other websites, worksheets, documents and publications which I’ve used in the past.  But what have I missed?
